What the execution data shows

  • #2 ES was close to perfect: 13 points on zero heat, a 96% capture, and the fill was at the low of the move.
  • #3 NQ short took 12.6 points in 28 seconds, also on zero heat.
  • #4 NQ short took 20.5 points in under 2 minutes. NQ then fell another 76 points to 29,094 within half an hour, so a runner had a lot of room.
  • #1 NQ is the trade to look hard at. The first fill was at 29,316.25, and contracts were added about 50 points lower. Price then fell to 29,228.25, 88 points below the first fill. At its worst, the 4-lot position was down about $5,000. That’s more than my largest realized loss in the log. The exit at 29,307.00 was below the first fill, so only the add made it a winner.

Takeaway

Three of tonight’s four trades were textbook, with near-zero heat. The fourth made $1,283 by sitting through $5,000 of open risk. Adding to a losing position has now shown up in four of my last six sessions, and it has worked every time. That’s exactly why it’s dangerous: one night it won’t come back. A hard rule fits here, such as no adds once the first fill is 15 NQ points against me.
